Google, today, commemorates Mary Leakey's 100th birthday anniversary with an attractive doodle.
NEW DELHI: Google,
today, commemorates Mary Leakey's 100th birthday anniversary with an
attractive doodle. Leakey, a renowned British archaeologist and
anthropologist, was born on February 6, 1913 in London, England and is
well known for her significant discoveries and exploring the fossils of
the ancient hominines. She collaborated with her husband Louis Leakey
through a large part of her career and her three sons also entered the
same field. She died on December 9, 1996 at the age of 83.
Leakey's discoveries included the fossilised Proconsul skull, an extinct ape that is believed to be ancestor to humans. Another discovery was that of the Zinjanthropus skull, an early hominin, at Olduvai Gorge. She is also credited with developing a system to classify stone tools found at Olduvai as well as discovering Laetoli footprints. Over the course of her career, Leakey wrote four books.
Her passion towards unearthing the fossils was somewhat influenced by John Frere, an antiquarian, and Sheppard Frere, an archaeologist. Moreover, she had a chance to accompany Elie Peyrony during an excavation at Les Eyzies, where she came across collection scrapers and other tools from the dump. It is believed that at this phase her interest in prehistory gradually sparked.

A ,French, tourist lady with disability has broken
a record of being the first disable woman to clinch the top of the free standing
tallest Mountain in Africa, Mount Kilimanjaro found in Tanzania.
Speaking with scribes few moment after descending down
Chrystel Alquivier said she was overwhelmed
with joy to fulfill her dream to reach the summit of Mt Kilimanjaro as her
campaign to people with disability to believe that they are able to achieve anything they
wish in life despite of their status.
“Just before we got to the top, I wanted to shout
and scream with excitement, but once we’d got there, it felt really strange.
She said that she got paralyzed when she was twenty
two years old and at that time she had
only two choices to make one being to commit suicide and die or accepting the
disability and continue with life, she chose to live to date.
She told reporters that people with disability can
do better than those without if they have confidence skills and courage to
pursue what they dream for life.
Mount Kilimanjaro is the highest free-standing mountain in Africa, standing at around 19,340 feet.
Tenacious climbers have to endure farmland, forest, and Alpine moorland.

It read:"Habari yako. Over the years, I have been greatly moved by the warmth and spirit - the strength and resolve - of the Kenyan people. And I've been grateful for my connection to Kenya, and the way you've welcomed me and my family to your beautiful country - from my father's village in Alego, to bustling Nairobi.
"In my visits, I've seen your progress. Kenya has lifted people from poverty, built an emerging democracy and civil society, and sustained a spirit of hope in the face of great difficulty. After the turmoil of five years ago, you've worked to rebuild communities, reform institutions and pass a new constitution.
"Now, Kenya must take the next step in March, with the first national elections under your new constitution.
"We all know what makes for successful elections. Kenya must reject intimidation and violence, and allow a free and fair vote. Kenyans must resolve disputes in the courts, not in the streets. Above all, the people of Kenya must come together, before and after the election, to carry on the work of building your country.
"The choice of who will lead Kenya is up to the Kenyan people. The United States does not endorse any candidate for office, but we do support an election that is peaceful and reflects the will of the people.
"This election can be another milestone toward a truly democratic Kenya defined by the rule of law and strong institutions. If you take that step, and reject a path of violence and division, then Kenya can move forward towards prosperity and opportunity that unleashes the extraordinary talents of your people - especially young people. If you continue to move forward, you can build a just Kenya that rejects corruption, and respects the rights and dignity of all Kenyans.
"This is a moment for the people of Kenya to come together, instead of tearing apart. If you do, you can show the world that you are not just a member of a tribe or ethnic group, but citizens of a great and proud nation. I can't imagine a better way to mark the 50th anniversary of Kenyan independence. And I say to all of you who are willing to walk this path of progress-you will continue to have a strong friend and partner in the United States of America. Kwaheri."

The Citizen Correspondent Moshi. Tanzania’s famous attractions have pulled a 33-year-old French tourist with disability to embark on a journey to become the first disabled female to scale the World’s highest freestanding mountain -- Kilimanjaro. Ms Chrystel Alquiver, whose both legs paralysed when she was 22-year-old, started her journey on Wednesday -- using a special wheelchair -- through Marangu route. She will be led by professional guides Victor Manyanga and Godfrey Mugana from Congema Tours and safaris Ltd. “I want to show the world that nothing is impossible. I would spend six days to reach the summit as normal people do,” says a determined Chrystel. She said that disability did not mean end of life; but just another side of it.“When I paralysed, there were two options -- either to commit suicide and die or face it. I chose life and today I’m proud of the way. I really feel lucky in life,” she told a press conference. Flagging off the girl, Congema Tours and Safaris managing director Constantine Malembela vowed to do everything to make her trip a success. “This is a rare incident, we feel fortunate to get a disable client whose mission is to scale Mount Kilimanjaro to inspire others,” he said. Congema boss further said that proves that the country was prepared to handle visitors of all kinds. “We offer customised holidays and safaris in Tanzania such as Serengeti, Selous Game Reserve and Ngorongoro Crater safaris, Zanzibar Beach holidays and Mount Kilimanjaro & Mount Meru climbing,” Mr Malembela said. |

Heads of State and nations meeting at the Rio+20 Summit in Brazil last year agreed to “strengthen and upgrade” UNEP in its Nairobi home. They also decided to transform its annual Governing Council from a membership of 58 nations to one of universal membership of more than 190 member states.
Organized by the Paul Tergat Foundation, Athletics Kenya and UNEP, with the support of the International Olympic Committee, the 21-kilometre celebratory run on 24 February is not only about this big boost to Kenya’s global standing in international and environmental affairs.
The race – which will start at the Kenya Technical Teachers College and wind through the leafy streets of Gigiri and surrounding neighborhoods – is also in support of The Sports for Peaceful Elections Campaign, started in January by the UN, the Sports Association, the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) and Google Kenya.
UNEP’s Clean Air Campaigns Patron Patrick Makau, whose time of 2:03:38 at the 2011 Berlin Marathon is the current world record, is supporting the run, as are Catherine Ndereba, former marathon World Champion, and Tecla Loroupe, former half-marathon World Champion.
There will also be a 7.4-kilometre fun run for all the family, allowing people of all ages and fitness levels to join in the festivities.
“UNEP has shown exceptional leadership by hosting the second edition of the UNEP Half marathon around its precincts here in Nairobi,” said Mr. Tergat. “As I said before, every athlete requires a very clean environment, especially clean air to be able to stay healthy and perform optimally; hence sports and environment are intertwined.”
“It is also encouraging that this year’s marathon will also be used to promote peace, which is extremely critical for this country as the race comes just a few days before our historic General Elections,” he added.
The run takes place shortly after UNEP’s Governing Council meets in Nairobi. The meeting is the first since the UN General Assembly in December 2012 voted to pass the decisions taken at Rio+20.
“The decision to strengthen UNEP at its headquarters in Kenya underlines how nations are increasingly recognizing that climate change to the loss of fertile lands are now challenging the lives and livelihoods of increasing numbers of people world-wide, but it also signals a fresh, determination to realize a more sustainable, Green Economy path,” said Nick Nuttall, Director of UNEP’s Division of Communications and Public Information.
“UNEP’s upgrade means that in many ways Nairobi is now truly the environmental capital of the world,” he added. “There is no more fitting way to demonstrate the unity of purpose that UN member states are now showing towards UNEP than a run that brings together Kenyans and peoples from all backgrounds and parts of the world in a display of solidarity for peace and the environment.”
A total prize purse of 1.4 million shillings is available. The winner of the Half Marathon will receive 150,000, while second and third place will receive 100,000 and 75,000 respectively. A cash prize will also be awarded to the top school team.
Since 1994, UNEP has been integrating its work on the environment with sport. Today, it advises countries and sporting federations on incorporating environmental considerations into all major sporting events.
UNEP has a longstanding collaboration with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in the greening of the Games that spans Athens 2004, Torino 2006, Beijing 2008 and Vancouver 2010.
The Russian government and the Organizing Committee of the Sochi 2014 Olympic Games also invited UNEP to provide guidance on the integration of environmental considerations in the preparation and staging of the games.
The FIFA World Cup 2014 and the Olympic Games in Brazil in 2016 are also set to benefit from UNEP’s assistance after an agreement was signed in 2012.
